EMDR

What is EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from distressing or overwhelming experiences. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess memories that feel “stuck,” allowing them to be stored in a way that feels less emotionally intense and more manageable. This approach can be especially supportive during the perinatal and postpartum seasons, when past or recent experiences may resurface and impact emotional wellbeing.

Rather than focusing solely on talk therapy, EMDR helps your nervous system process experiences at a deeper level—often leading to relief from anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and emotional overwhelm.

How EMDR Works

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping, or tones) while gently focusing on aspects of a distressing memory or belief. This process supports the brain’s natural healing ability, helping experiences feel more integrated and less activating over time. You remain present, in control, and supported throughout the process. EMDR is always paced according to your comfort and readiness, with attention to safety, grounding, and emotional regulation.

EMDR for Postpartum Anxiety

Postpartum anxiety can show up as constant worry, intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, or a sense of being “on edge.” EMDR can help address the underlying experiences, fears, or beliefs that contribute to anxiety, allowing your nervous system to feel safer and more settled. Many parents find that EMDR helps reduce reactivity and restore a sense of calm and confidence.

EMDR for Birth Trauma

Birth trauma may stem from emergency interventions, loss of control, unexpected outcomes, or feeling unheard or unsafe during labor and delivery. EMDR can help process these experiences so they no longer feel as emotionally charged or intrusive. Healing birth trauma can support emotional recovery, bonding, and future family planning decisions.

EMDR for General Trauma

Trauma does not have to be a single, dramatic event. EMDR can help with:

•Childhood or developmental trauma

•Medical trauma

•Relationship trauma

•Accumulated stress and overwhelm

By addressing how these experiences are stored in the body and mind, EMDR can reduce symptoms such as emotional triggers, avoidance, shame, and negative self-beliefs.

EMDR for Identity Shifts in Motherhood

Motherhood often brings profound shifts in identity, roles, and sense of self. EMDR can support processing feelings of grief, loss, or disconnection related to who you were before and who you are becoming. This work can help you reconnect with your values, strengths, and sense of self during periods of transition.

EMDR for Pregnancy Loss, Infant Loss or Stillbirth

Pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or infant loss can be deeply painful and isolating experiences. EMDR offers a gentle way to process grief, trauma, and complicated emotions such as guilt, anger, or sadness. Therapy is tailored to honor your experience and move at a pace that feels supportive, helping you carry your loss with greater compassion and less emotional overwhelm.
